Street Blitz is on again in East Newman, Volunteers are needed!

Street Blitz is part of the East Newman Community Outreach, designed to bring together young people, families, service providers and stakeholders. It happens twice a year to help clean up the streets and parks of East Newman.

Please leave your unwanted items on the verge for collection.

Volunteers are needed! The jobs we need help with include food distribution, collecting rubbish, and loading the skip bins. Having a ute/trailer available will also be a big help if you can volunteer your vehicle and some of your time.

Sustainable Litter Collection is an ongoing program that has been running for 10 years, where the Shire of East Pilbara facilitates the program and local clubs and organisations pitch in to help. As part of the program, clubs are paid $2000 by the Shire for one month of litter collection. About 45 bags of litter are collected from Newman streets and the environment each week.

Four years ago, the Shire of East Pilbara organised and facilitated the Great Northern Clean Up in October, where 1.5 tonnes of general waste and about 2500 drink containers were removed from the environment. The containers were returned to the Shire’s Containers for Change refund point.

Through the Newman Futures Program the first East Newman Street Blitz was on June 23rd-24th in 2021. The event encouraged local community members to participate and contribute to a clean and safe public space in East Newman. The Shire has worked to support and advise on responsible waste management. More than 80 residents and volunteers filled six skip bins with household waste over the two-day event, with thousands of cans and bottles taken to the Containers for Change refund point. The event has continued twice per year since that time.

By working with the community to keep recycling contamination rates low through ongoing education, the Shire will divert about 260 tonnes of materials from landfill every year.
