This project has a total value of $1.278 million dollars and offers the community additional choices for sporting outcomes and healthy lifestyles.
The facility was officially opened on December 5, by local Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel and Shire President Anthony Middleton, with a community celebration following in the afternoon. Mr Walter Stream official welcomes everyone to Palyku Country on behalf of the Palyku-Jartai Aboriginal Corporation.
The Project was identified in November 2021 as part of the Strategic Recreation Master Plan for the Shire of East Pilbara, offering the local community another option for socializing and getting together for shared recreational goals and a focus on staying healthy through exercise.
Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel said, “Sports play a crucial role in uniting communities, promoting physical and mental well-being, and offering young people the chance to develop valuable skills and confidence. I’m thrilled to see the Yirrunkadji Community Sports Courts becoming a central hub for local athletes and fostering a sense of community pride and togetherness.
I’m excited to witness the lasting positive impact this facility will have on youth development and the broader community for many years to come!”
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said the project had been made possible through the state government’s Community Sport, Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), with a contribution $421,245, with additional funding from the Shire of East Pilbara.
“This grant has enabled us to build this wonderful facility and funding for such important infrastructure helps us to serve the community by offering health and fitness options for the residents in Nullagine.
“As part of the Shire’s commitment to significant investment in sport and recreation infrastructure in Nullagine, we hope it will be well utilised as a gathering place and space for all to enjoy and come together in community, for community.”
