Oval Lighting Tender awarded

A tender has been awarded by the Shire for an upgrade in lighting at local facilities and sporting venues across Newman. The upgrade is worth nearly $1m.

Shire President Anthony Middelton said, the upgrades to the lighting systems on Boomerang, Kangaroo, and Capricorn Ovals will make the facilities more accessible for small and large ball sports, increasing efficiency and aligning to sporting industry standards.”

“It's fantastic to see this project progressing and I know that it will have a significant impact on the operations of our clubs, with the Pilbara heat most sport is done in the evenings under lights – so this project is critical to the health and well being of the community.”

The current lighting infrastructure on these ovals is difficult to control and does not meet the required levels for optimal visibility and safety during events, affecting the ultimate use of the facilities.

The project was first identified during community consultation for the Recreation Masterplan, with the Shire working through implementing the recommendations.

Upgrades have been planned in three stages.

Stage 01 – Capricorn Oval Lighting Upgrade, Stage 02 – Kangaroo Oval Lighting Upgrade, Stage 03 – Boomerang Oval Lighting Upgrade.

One of the benefits of the project is the minimization of spill light to adjoining properties and glare to the players, spectators and neighbours. The work comes with a 10-year warranty.

Council has five flood-lit ovals, netball courts and tennis courts that can be booked with oval lighting currently scheduled by Shire staff through a separate system.
