Two primary school students have won the Shire of East Pilbara's naming and designing competition for the Waste Centre’s new Cleanaway truck in Newman.
Five-year-old Newman Primary school student Evelyn named the lizard Rocky, and nine- year-old Ari also from Newman Primary School, has been announced the winner of the artwork.
The competition was part of a Shire initiative held in June 2023, to help design and name the new waste truck.
Winners were chosen by Shire President Anthony Middleton and CEO Steven Harding, the two judges of the competition.
The winner of each section won $1000 for their school.
The trucks design was based around the Pilbara rock monitor (Varanus Pilbarensis) a native Pilbara species.
The other side of the truck shows a photographic image of Kalgan’s Pool.
In Martu and Nyiyaparli language Rocky is (Yapu) meaning rock and a great name for a Pilbara Rock Monitor lizard. The Pilbara Rock Monitor is common in the Northwest and a smaller sized lizard, reaching 470mm top to tail, with cream and ochre coloured stripes across its body helping it blend into its surroundings.
They can be found across the northern parts of the Pilbara on boulders, rocky ranges and plateaus with the mainly dry and arid weather of the region.
This species is considered to be rare but there has been a resurgence with increased sightings occurring across the Pilbara, more recently.
