Stars of the East Pilbara community and sports awards 2024
The Shire of East Pilbara has honoured its sports stars and volunteers in the 2024 awards ceremony.
Shire President Anthony Middleton said the heartfelt messages in the nominations in the lead up to the event, showed how much volunteers were the backbone of the community allowing lives to be enriched, bringing new activities and new events to the region and allowing new friendships to be formed.
“There is a lot of cross over between the volunteering community and our sporting communities, whether you’re playing or working behind the scenes, bringing entertainment, health and fitness to the region,” Cr Middelton said.
“The value of volunteering in rural communities cannot be overstated.”
Former Australian Netballer Natalie Medhurst, an elite sportswoman and a commentator for FOX Sports, presented the awards in Newman.
Junior Sportsperson of the Year was awarded to Duane Scomparin.
Sporting Group of the Year was won by the Newman Cricket Association.
The Junior Volunteer of the Year in 2024 was awarded to two winners, Ella Russell and Bianca Manu and the Award for Community Volunteer of the Year in 2024 was also shared between two winners, Brooke Wilson and Elesha Martin.
Umpire of the Year was awarded to Jaime Higgott. She was also a finalist in the 2024 Pilbara Regional Umpire of the Year awards.
Sports Volunteer of the Year went to the Newman Cricket Association’s Jono Smaill.
He was also awarded the 2024 Pilbara Regional Volunteer of the Year award, as judged by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
And the Sportsperson of the Year went to Anthony Widders for the Pioneers Football Club and Newman National Football League.
Coach of the Year was Rajan Nair, from Newman Junior Soccer Association.
St Garage’s Anglican Op Shop won the Community Group of the Year.
