The Shire of East Pilbara is excited to announce the upgrade of sports lighting at Capricorn, Kangaroo, and Boomerang Ovals, in collaboration with the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries through the Club Night Lights Program. Work will begin at Capricorn Oval with the decommissioning of the existing lights from 3rd to 6th April, followed by the installation of new cross arms and lights from 7th to 15th April. Upgrades to the other ovals are expected to be completed by mid-June 2025.

National Local Government Awards Finalist – Vote for 'Little Red in the Hood' in the Environmental Sustainability Category! The Shire of East Pilbara's "Little Red in the Hood" is a musical theatre waste education program aimed at teaching local youth about recycling, litter prevention, and waste reduction. This engaging and interactive program reached over 450 young participants and is already showing positive behavioural changes, like increased participation in the local deposit scheme. Stay Alert for Wandering Livestock Driving in pastoral regions? Keep an eye out for wandering livestock, especially at dusk and dawn, when animals are most active. The Shire of East Pilbara covers some 371,696 square kilometres with a large proportion held in pastoral leases. Apart from perimeter and paddock fencing, these leases remain unfenced. As a consequence stock are often found on and adjacent to the many roads which pass through them.

The Shire of East Pilbara (Shire) is pleased to announce that the 2025 NAIDOC Ball will be held at the Newman East Pilbara Arts Centre on Saturday, 28th June. The event start time will be 6:00pm, concluding at 10:30pm. The Shire would like to invite expressions of interest to provide the catering service between 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Proposals should accommodate for 220 guests, with a preference for a sit-down meal, with an entree, main course and sweets to conclude. Buffet-style service is also welcome. Additionally, the service should include a selection of non-alcoholic beverages available throughout the evening.

BreastScreen WA is bringing its FREE screening mammogram service to Newman from 31st March 2025 to 11th April 2025. The mobile clinic will be located at: Newman Visitor Centre, Newman Drive Eligibility:Women aged 40 years and over with no symptoms are eligible for a FREE screening mammogram.

Following the first reported human case of Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) in Western Australia this season, the WA Department of Health is reminding residents and travellers in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions to take extra precautions against mosquito bites. With the flooding in the East Pilbara due to ex-Cyclone Zelia, there will be an increased risk of mosquito breeding in the floodwaters. While the exposure site is in the East Kimberley, significant Flavivirus activity has been observed across both the Kimberley and Pilbara.

TROPICAL CYCLONE ZELIA UPDATE Please refer to Emergency WA - Alerts and Warnings for the most up to date alerts and warnings. Tropical Cyclone Zelia is expected to cross the coast approximately in the area between Port Hedland and Karratha as a Category 5 system on Friday 14 February and then track south. It is expected to reduce in intensity as it moves inland but will still bring with it the potential for strong winds, heavy rainfall and flooding which means some roads will be closed.
